Beyond PFOS and PFOA: Ultrashort-chain PFAS and UCMR 6 implications - Nov 12 - 2-3 pm EST
Beyond PFOS and PFOA: Ultrashort-chain PFAS and UCMR 6 implications - Nov 12 - 2-3 pm EST

Proposed monitoring requirements under the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) sixth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 6) are bringing ultrashort-chain PFAS into sharper focus. Proposed on July 1, 2026, UCMR 6 would require public water systems to monitor 30 unregulated contaminants between 2028 and 2030, including ultrashort-chain PFAS. These compounds are highly mobile, difficult to detect and challenging to treat, creating new considerations for organizations responsible for water quality, environmental compliance and PFAS management.

Learn about the science and behavior of these compounds from GHD, analytical testing and measurement from Pace® Analytical Services and high-temperature incineration and other destruction methods from Veolia. Through real-world testing examples and practical lessons learned, the discussion will connect these perspectives to monitoring, site management, treatment selection and long-term planning.

What you'll gain

  • Assess how the behavior of ultrashort-chain PFAS could affect monitoring, site management and treatment decisions.
  • Explore current approaches to sampling, testing and measuring these compounds through real-world examples and practical lessons learned.
  • Consider the role of high-temperature incineration and other destruction methods in PFAS management.
  • Connect scientific, analytical and treatment perspectives to long-term planning.

Who it's for
Designed for professionals responsible for drinking water systems, environmental compliance, site remediation, industrial operations or PFAS risk management. This session is relevant to utilities, regulators, operators, technology providers and other organizations seeking practical clarity on how ultrashort-chain PFAS could influence future monitoring, treatment and management strategies.

Dietrich Hovener - Vice President of Thermal Operations - Veolia North America

Dietrich Hovener is Vice President of Thermal Operations at Veolia North America, where he directs multi-site hazardous-waste incineration to ensure that high-temperature destruction stays safe, compliant, and reliable. At Veolia’s Port Arthur, Texas incinerator, he directed operations during the 2024 third-party PFAS destruction tests on AFFF, contaminated soil, spent carbon and CF4, using EPA methods OTM-45 and OTM-50 in one of the industry’s most comprehensive studies to date. Run to EPA guidance at 2,040°F, the tests showed hazardous-waste incineration can destroy targeted PFAS up to 99.9999%. He is a chemical engineer from North-West University in South Africa.
