Join us at the Tailings and Mine Waste Conference 2026

For nearly five decades, the Tailings and Mine Waste Conference has brought together industry leaders to advance safer and more sustainable mine waste management.

At GHD, we help mining clients strengthen tailings governance, reduce risk and unlock value from mine waste through responsible design, operational excellence and innovative repurposing solutions that support long-term environmental and community outcomes.

As a Gold Sponsor of TMW 2026, we're proud to be part of the conversations shaping the future of tailings management and responsible mining. Join us November 8-11, and stop by booth #15 to connect with our team and discuss practical solutions for today's tailings and mine waste challenges.

Can impact severity be used to guide ALARP decisions for social, environmental, reputation and business risks?

GISTM requires tailings risks to be reduced to ALARP, but social, environmental, reputational and business risks can be difficult to measure. This paper outlines a practical method for assessing these risks and supporting ALARP decisions.

From failure modes to emergency response plans. In the age of Artificial Intelligence, what is important?

This paper presents an integrated framework linking failure modes, monitoring, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) and Emergency Response Plans (ERPs) to strengthen tailings risk management. It also explores how AI can support early risk detection and response when validated by qualified professionals.

Foundation verification for Tailings Storage Facilities: A practical framework aligned with the global industry standard on tailings management

This report presents a GISTM-aligned foundation verification framework for a large TSF. It combines field data, design assumptions and governance oversight to improve traceability, manage geotechnical risk and support accountable delivery.

Lessons learnt from GISTM self-assessment third-party validation process

What does effective GISTM validation look like? Based on insights from multiple BHP third-party reviews, this paper examines common challenges and lessons learned from conformance assessments, helping mining companies strengthen transparency and support more effective tailings governance.

Limitations in estimating the Coefficient of Earth Pressure at Rest (Ko) in transitional tailings using CPTu and DMT

This case study compares CPTu and DMT estimates of K₀ in partially drained, contractive tailings. Divergent results reveal the limits of standard correlations and the need for better site investigation and interpretation to support reliable stability modelling.

A case for using high sulfur tailings in cement paste backfill at an underground tin mine

A study at Renison Mine found that alkaline alumina by-products improve the strength and acid-neutralising capacity of high-sulfur tailings used in cemented paste backfill. The results support reduced surface tailings storage and beneficial reuse of industrial by-products.
